VICKI SHUCK was born and raised in the high desert country of south-central Oregon. Growing up with lots of room to roam and plenty of solitude encouraged her appreciation for the austere and dramatic landscape and its vitality. She also credits the religious tradition she grew up in which was steeped in mystery, silence and beauty for nourishing her senses.
Demetrios Jameson, one of Shuck’s instructors at Oregon State University, had a huge influence on the development of her work. He was able to nudge her into her own way of seeing and was a great example with his superb drawing skills and use of color. Canadian artist, Emily Carr, and Georgia O’Keeffe have also been role models in the way they strove to get “below the surface” of a scene and connect on a deeper level so that something more may emerge.
“People are always curious about the lines and movement in my drawings,” comments Vicki. “Those extensions of the objects just kind of began to happen in my drawings years ago. I finally realized that they are telling me something, showing me the inherent Life and movement present but that we don’t see with our physical eyes.”
Besides drawing and painting, Shuck also teaches art and does illustration work. Vicki lives in Bend with her husband, artist Gary Vincent, and their dog, Murphy.
