ALISA HUNTLEY
ARTIST STATEMENT: Our society is so fast and disconnected, we need to find something that makes us pause, even for a moment and reflect upon the world at a deeper level. I want to do more than simply document an image. I translate my emotional response to capture the spirit of a place, object, figure or moment in time with an eye for interesting composition, lush color and beautiful lighting.
Rich color and the lack of color in an image can evoke a strong emotional response. My paintings tend to have many layers of complimentary colors. So, when you are looking at a terracotta wall for example, there is a whole range of colors. In the shade there might be a streak of cool lavander over a cool pink, umber, cadmium red and yellow. Layering brings a richness of a color when contrasted by areas of thin washes and a spark of color peaking through creates a stimulating painting.
I internalize an image for a period of time which builds an intensity and sensitivity to the subject. Then, the gestural application of paint is emotional and intuitive. The excitement of the painting process culminates when the spirit of the subject emerges through the harmonious integration of color, strong values, interesting composition and energetic brushtrokes.
