LINDY GRUGER HANSON
"My paintings are imaginary worlds filled with strange shapes, interwoven line and vivid colors. They are filled with personal marks and images. I use vibrant colors to radiate positivity, transforming mental images into graphic form which produce an aesthetic beauty, as well as my own spiritual exploration.
My paintings involve freely applied abstract shapes and lines but at times I will use dream-like figurative forms, often with a whimsical, playful feeling. I like to paint the world of the imaginative, a world radiating with energy. I have a strong interest in mythology, dreams, symbolism and ancient cultures which influence my creations. Themes explored deal with following one’s own path, growth, worlds within worlds, birds, gardens and being still. I believe the answers to life’s questions are held in the psyche of each person, waiting to be released. These images that come forth through art are a healing process, a starting point to deeper understanding of the self.
The medium I use most in painting is acrylic. My technique involves building up layers of paint over an undercoat of textural pattern. I use a dry canvas or paper that is covered with gesso. Layers of color and line are applied next. My own printing technique is used to apply pattern to the painting. Often this pattern is given an aged look by rubbing some of the paint off with water when it is semi-dry. More color, marks and images are applied next, building up layers and giving the painting a feeling of depth, texture and age as the patterns begin to fade into the background. I make some of the images glow as if surrounded in a warm halo of positive energy."
